In Project Zomboid Build 42, the old method of repairing car seats with ripped sheets has been patched out. You’re now stuck with leveling Mechanics by removing and installing car parts.

You still need Electrical 1 and Mechanics 2 to hotwire cars.

The “Once-a-Day” Rule still applies. You’ll still only get XP from removing and installing parts on a specific vehicle once every 24 hours.

Note the above values can vary depending on the vehicle you are working on.

Success vs. Failure XP

Efficiency is key. Failing an action only gives a measly 0.3 XP, while succeeding rewards you with 1.3 – 2.0 XP.

  • Focus on: High-success parts like the Hood, Trunk Lid, Seats and Windows .
  • Avoid: The Windshield and Muffler early on; the success rate is too low.

Note: You’ll need the respective Laines Auto Magazines to work on all the higher xp yielding parts of the car.

Don’t forget to read your Mechanics 1 Book. It’ll increase your failure xp from 0.3to 0.8 XP.

Skip the Tires

While Brakes and Suspension provide decent XP, they are “locked” behind removing the tires first (Req. Lug Wrench and Jack). Tyers give very little XP, there should be plenty of cars around so just move onto the next car.
